Drago Volante
The project, named “Drago Volante” (“Flying Dragon”), is a challenge that combines the ideals of sport, integration, friendship, and love and respect for the sea. The aim is to bring offshore sailing closer to younger people: the team, which is composed exclusively of under-18 sailors, will try their hand at being on a boat and gain specific technical knowledge as well as improve their ability for team work, always actively collaborating with the Circles of belonging with regard to the implementation and planning.
The Boat
The boat chosen for this project is the Farr 30 (on whose side it’s possible to see the logo of Fonderia Morini) which was initially designed for the Tour de France by Bruce Farr – a New Zealand designer that has developed some of the boats which have made sailing world history. It is a fast boat from upwind to astern, capable of impressive performances with either little or strong wind, and more importantly solid and safe. Thus ideal for a team of 7 or 8 young athletes.
The program
The participants are going to learn a lot during this project, starting with a thorough understanding of the boat and all its parts, a study of the onboard instruments, notions of meteorology and route charting, and then acquiring the skills necessary for sailing a boat safely both at open sea and during the mooring phase; not to mention learning the ability to work as a team and cooperate in order to better face the situations that can arise on board.
The young crew of the “Drago Volante” is currently participating in the 41st Winter Championship organized by the Ravenna Yacht Club of Marina di Ravenna. During this year – following the calendar defined by the coach - the boat will take part in several offshore regattas taking place in the Adriatic Sea, such as “La Ottanta”, “La Galiola”, “La Ri.Ga.Sa.” and “La Barcolana”.
