Fonderia Morini, flooding, september 2024

Interview with Enrico Morini on the consequences of the flood

THE RISKS OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE EMILIA-ROMAGNA REGION

On September 19, 2024, the Senio River overflowed once again, just a few kilometers from Cotignola (RA).

Fonderia Morini was also affected. Below are the words of Enrico Morini, president of Fonderia Morini, as shared with TG3.

"We're looking at approximately 2 million euros in damages, including machinery and lost production. Thankfully, within ten days—with the help of our employees and everything we had on hand—we managed to get back on our feet. But the situation is worrying. We haven’t received anything from last year,” said the president, referring to the funds that have yet to arrive for the flood that devastated the Romagna region in May 2023, “and now we’ve submitted new claims for this second flood. But is that it? Since 2023, nothing significant has been done in terms of prevention, apart from cutting down trees and leaving them near the rivers. It almost feels like no one cares about this situation.”

The frustration is evident from those who have suffered damage for the second time, whether it's private homes or, as in the case of Fonderia Morini, businesses.

Recovering—but with what outlook? Without effective prevention policies, there’s a risk that these types of events caused by climate change will occur much more frequently. The question remains: what has been done since last May to ensure the safety of rivers and embankments?
